RAPTORS

Raptors are carnivorous. They hunt by sight during the day, are long lived, and have low reproductive rates. They catch their prey via strong claws – three pointing forward and one pointing backward. The raptors that hunt by day are: hawks, eagle, kites, vultures, falcons. Owls hunt by night. Raptors are also called birds of prey.

This page contains birds that have "eagle" as part of their name. The term eagle is not a precise scientific name; what one person considers to be an eagle another may consider to be a hawk. In fact, the "solitary eagles" are placed by most people in genus Buteogallus.  That genus also contains species termed "hawks". This has lead to the Buteogallus genus being split over two webpage; this one for eagles and another for hawks.


Genus Aquila
There is disagreement over what species should be included in the genus Aquila. If the location of a specific species is questionable, then an alternate genus is listed also. Some include all members of genus Hieraaetus in Aquila.

The African Hawk-Eagle has blackish upperparts; white underparts with heavy black streaking; white under-tail with black terminal band. Juvenile has brown upperparts; white underparts with rufous streaking.
Similar to: Bonelli's Eagle. African Hawk-Eagle has darker upperparts and heavier streaking than Bonelli's Eagle.

The Bonelli's Eagle has dark brown upperparts; white with dark streaks underparts; gray upper-tail; white under-tail with single black terminal band; yellow feet, eyes.
Similar to: African Hawk-Eagle. African Hawk-Eagle has darker upperparts and heavier streaking than Bonelli's Eagle.

The Booted Eagle has two forms. Pale has mainly light gray plumage with darker head and flight feathers. Other form has brown plumage with dark gray flight feathers.

The Cassin's Hawk-Eagle has grayish-black upperparts with some white edges; white underparts; dark and light brown bands on tail; pale yellow feet.

The Golden Eagle has dark brown plumage; lighter golden brown on head and neck. Juveniles have white patches on wings and tail.
Similar to: Bald Eagle. Juvenile Bald Eagle has larger head, more protruding head, and larger bill than Golden Eagle.

The Greater Spotted Eagle has mainly brown plumage with the head darker.
Similar to: Lesser Spotted Eagle. Easy to confuse Lesser Spotted Eagle and Greater Spotted Eagle. Greater Spotted Eagle is slightly larger. Lesser Spotted Eagle has white V at base of upper-tail; Greater Spotted Eagle does not.

The Gurney's Eagle has dark brown to black upperparts; light brown to white underparts.

The Imperial Eagle has mainly dark brown upperparts with white shoulder patches; light brown head, neck, underparts; head, neck may have gold tinge; gray bill with yellow cere and dark tip. It breeds from southeastern Europe to western and central Asia. Most populations are migratory and winter in northeastern Africa, and southern and eastern Asia.
Similar to: Spanish Eagle. Spanish Eagle once consider subspecies of Imperial Eagle.

The Indian Spotted Eagle has light brown plumage.
Similar to; Lesser Spotted Eagle. The Indian Spotted Eagle has lighter color than the Lesser Spotted Eagle.

The Spanish Eagle has mainly dark brown upperparts with white shoulder patches; light brown head, neck; iight brown or dark brown underparts depending on morph; light gray bill with yellow cere and darker tip. It is found in central and south-west Spain, adjacent areas of Portugal and possibly northern Morocco.

The Steppe Eagle is a large eagle with brown upperparts and blackish flight feathers and tail.
Similar to: Tawny Eagle. The dark morph Tawny Eagle can be confused with a Steppe Eagle. The Tawny Eagle has uniformly dark upperparts; Steppe Eagle has darker wings than back.

The Tawny Eagle has several morphs, from light to dark.
Similar to: Steppe Eagle. The dark morph Tawny Eagle can be confused with a Steppe Eagle. The Tawny Eagle has uniformly dark upperparts; Steppe Eagle has darker wings than back.

Eagle,_Wedge-tailed Aquila audax   Found: Australia
The Wedge-tailed Eagle has a wedge shaped tail when seen in flight. Young eagles are a mid-brown colour with slightly lighter and reddish-brown wings and head. As they grow older, their colour becomes darker, reaching a dark blackish-brown shade after about ten years

Genus Buteogallus
The Crowned Solitary Eagle and Black Solitary Eagle are closely related and have sometimes been put into their own genus Harpyhaliaetus. Smaller members of Buteogallus are commonly called hawks and are shown elsewhere. The solitary eagles tend to eat reptiles and the smaller "hawks" tend to eat crustaceans.

Genus Circaetus
The Snake-eagles, mainly African eagles, eat mainly snakes but also lizzards and small mammals. They are medium sized eagles. Snake-eagles build stick nests and lay just one egg.

Genus Haliaeetus
Fish eagles, also know as sea eagles eat mainly fish and small mammals. Most have white tails. Their closet relatives are in genus Ichthyophaga. They are probably closer to kites of genus Milvus than the "true eagles" of genus Aguila.

These fish eagles are closely related to the "sea eagles" of genus Haliaeetus.

Genus Nisaetus
The Hawk-eagles are found mainly in tropical Asia.  They are slender bodied, medium sized hawk-eagles with rounded wings, long feathered legs, barred wings, crests and usually adapted to forest habitats.

Genus Spizaetus
